The Nobel Foundation is the living proof that an institution doesn’t need a building to rise to prominence. Despite early ambitions, throughout its existence – more than a hundred years – The Nobel Foundation has thrived without its own building. Most of its components have survived in a state of improvisation, essentially ‘squatting’ in various part of the town, in ‘borrowed buildings’… In terms of its own necessity, a new, purpose built Nobel Center faces a considerable burden of proof.

Apart from the surprisingly large areas of its surface that are superbly planned, London’s planning is an amalgamation of rules (some of them medieval), negotiation (some of it highly personal), and financial compensation for the damage inflicted by almost any structure on its neighbours.

De Rotterdam is conceived as a vertical city: three interconnected mixed-use towers accommodating offices, apartments, a hotel, conference facilities, gym, shops, restaurants, and cafes. The project began in 1997, construction started at the end of 2009 and completion is scheduled for 2013.

The Interlace, one of the largest and most ambitious residential developments in Singapore, presents a radically new approach to contemporary living in a tropical environment. Instead of creating a cluster of isolated, vertical towers – the default typology of residential developments in Singapore – the design proposes an intricate network of living and social spaces integrated with the natural environment.

The Shenzhen Stock Exchange is conceived as a physical materialization of the virtual stock market: it is a building with a floating base, representing the stock market - more than physically accommodating it. Typically, the base of a building anchors a structure and connects it emphatically to the ground.
