Sou Fujimoto . + Kawasaki Brand Design

The Miyawaki Building is an unassuming 3-storey European-style brick building dating from 1932. For the past 40 years it had been operating as a restaurant, but was recently purchased by Kawasaki Brand Design. The 31-year old owner, Rikihiro Kawasaki, originally had plans to demolish the building and replace it with a high-rise tower designed by architect Sou Fujimoto.

Sou Fujimoto . + dezeen

Sou Fujimoto was selected this year to create a facade for a 15,200-square-foot mixed-use retail building in the Design District’s Palm Court, which is set to bow in 2014. Fujimoto’s facade encompasses the building’s first and second floor arcades and creates a structural waterfall pedestrians can walk under. The Palm Court will house about 20 watch and jewelry brands.
